In 1950, Kakuichi Kounoue, Mayor of Biei Town, succeeded in drilling after many hardships, and colorless hot water of 48°C gushed out from 399m under the ground.
The hot spring was named “Shirogane Onsen” (platinum hot spring) .

Kounoue said, “This hot spring is so precious that it should be called platinum that has sprung up from the depths of the earth.

The road from Biei House to Biei Shirogane Onsen is called Shirakaba Kaido (white birch road.) It is lined with 4 km-long birch forests that grew wild after the mudflow from the eruption of Mount Tokachi in 1926.
